Chaotic Be Jack (The Cap's Place Series Book 5) Page 27

In many ways I didn’t want the added complexity of having any option to rebuild. Yet, I’m smart enough to know that just summarily rejecting the possibility of selling would be shortsighted. I took the offer and his embossed business card and promised we would talk again, at least by phone, within the seven-day period.

Over lunch I told Moe and Marge about the offer to purchase being made. I didn’t share the amount, because I was positive that they would both tell me I was a fool if I didn’t take it. I just didn’t want that added pressure. Marge pointed out that she would expect the offer to be a good one, because it was common knowledge that a developer was attempting to buy properties in the area and that mine was probably the linchpin. Owning my property would give them leverage against adjoining properties, like the marina. From that perspective, my decision would impact not just those who work at Cap’s Place, but those working at many businesses around us. Thanks, Marge.

The remainder of Wednesday and all day Thursday, Marge, Moe, and I chased the myriad of issues posed by the cleanup and insurance adjustment process. I was totally confident that Marge and Moe could handle everything in my absence, but the last thing I felt like doing was jetting off to Michigan.

I hadn’t seen PJ after Wednesday morning, but we talked a couple of times on the phone Thursday. She had been able to locate a record of Julia turning up at a shelter at one of the local churches. It sounded like she had wandered aimlessly from the time she left the hospital on Friday evening until she showed up at the church midday Saturday. The staff at the shelter had been able to coax her identity and the story of Owen’s death from her. With that information they had been able to reach some relatives in Illinois who drove down and picked her up to take her home. PJ said that Owen’s body had still not been recovered. Thinking about Julia, and all she had lost, made me feel guilty for thinking I had problems.

A sudden jolt of air turbulence jarred me back to the present. I really didn’t know what lay ahead, either in Michigan or in Florida. My only solace was the fact that the beverage cart was only a couple of rows away.
